# Add your first product

> Create a product from Products > Create Product. Pick what kind it is, give it a name, a price, pictures and stock, click Create, then set its Status to Active so shoppers can buy it.

Help Centre / Getting started - Updated 29 October 2026

This walks you through putting your first product in your shop: choosing what kind of product it is, adding a name, description, price, pictures and stock, and making it visible to shoppers. It takes a few minutes. Everything else on the product page is optional and you can come back to it later.

The examples use a coffee shop selling a bag of beans, but the steps are the same for anything you sell.

## Before you begin

- Have a few pictures of the product ready. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and iPhone photos all work.
- If you already sell on Shopify, WooCommerce, Squarespace or Big Cartel, you don't need to add products one by one. Go to **Products** and click **Import** to bring your catalogue across from your shop's address.

## Step 1: Choose what kind of product it is

1. In your dashboard, go to **Products**.
2. Click **Create Product**. If you have no products yet, the same button sits under **No products yet** in the middle of the page.
3. Pick the kind of product you are selling:
   - **Physical**: something you ship, like a bag of coffee, a mug or a print. You get shipping, stock tracking and variants.
   - **Digital**: a downloadable file, like an ebook or a brewing guide. There is no shipping, and the buyer is emailed their download when they pay.
   - **Bundle**: a set of your other products sold at one price, like a gift set.
   - **Gift card**: a store balance your customers can buy and spend. This opens its own page rather than the product form.

Choose carefully: the kind can't be changed after the product is created. If you pick the wrong one, start again with **Create Product**.

## Step 2: Fill in the basics

The product page is a single column of sections, with **Status** and **Organisation** on the right.

1. Under **Basics**, type the **Product name**, for example `Portland Morning Blend, 12 oz`. This is the only thing you must fill in before you can create the product.
2. Add a **Short description** if you want one. It appears in product listings, such as your shop's product grid.
3. Under **Description**, write the full description shoppers read on the product page: what it is, what it tastes like, how big it is.

## Step 3: Add pictures

Under **Media**, drop your pictures onto the box or click **browse** to pick them. You can add several at once, and videos too.

The first picture is the main one, shown on listings and at the top of the product page. Drag the pictures to change the order.

## Step 4: Set the price

Under **Pricing**:

1. Type the **Price**, for example `16.00`. Prices are in your store's currency.
2. Optionally, add a **Compare-at price**. This is the original price, shown struck through next to the price to highlight a discount.
3. Optionally, add your **Cost**, what the product costs you. Shoppers never see it.

## Step 5: Set your stock

For a physical product, the **Inventory** section holds **SKU**, **Barcode (GTIN)** and **Stock**.

- Type how many you have in **Stock**, for example `40`. Each order holds one, and the product shows as sold out once every one is held or sold. The number in **Stock** itself goes down when you fulfil the order. See [Track stock and inventory](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/track-stock-and-inventory.md).
- If you never run out, for example something made to order, click the **∞** button next to **Stock**. Orders keep going through and the product never sells out.

SKU and barcode are optional. Fill in the barcode if you plan to list the product on Google Shopping.

**Shipping** for a physical product is set to **Use store shipping rates** to start with, so it is priced by your delivery zones in **Settings > Shipping**, like every other product. You can leave it as it is.

## Variants and other extras

If the product comes in options, like sizes or grinds, tick **This product has variants** under **Variants**. Each option can then have its own price and stock, and the **Inventory** section moves into each variant. You can do this now or later; a first product works fine without variants.

Below the sections, **Add to this product** lists extras such as subscriptions, volume price breaks and order limits. You don't need any of them to start selling.

## Step 6: Create the product

While you are filling in the page, the bar at the top shows **Unsaved changes**. Nothing is saved until you click **Create** in that bar.

![A new physical product with its name, price and stock filled in, Status set to Draft, and the Create button beside Unsaved changes](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/add-your-first-product/new-product-form.webp)

Click **Create**. The product is saved and its page reopens, now with a **Save** button instead. From here on, each change you make shows **Unsaved changes** again until you click **Save**. If you try to leave the page with unsaved changes, Shoprocket asks before throwing them away.

**For a digital product,** upload the file buyers will download now. Under **Files & delivery**, click **Upload files**. Files can only be added once the product has been created.

## Step 7: Make it visible in your shop

A new product starts as a **Draft**, which shoppers can't see. When you are happy with it:

1. In the **Status** card on the right, change **Status** to **Active**.
2. Click **Save**.

The product now appears in your shop. The card shows how it stands under **On the storefront**.

To take a product off sale later, set its **Status** back to **Draft**, or to **Archived** for one you no longer sell, and click **Save**.
