# Attributes and product filters

> Attributes are facts about your products, like Roast level, Origin or Bag weight. Define them once in Attributes, set each product's value under Specifications, and shoppers see them in the product's spec table and can filter your product listings by them.

Help Centre / Products - Updated 29 October 2026

Attributes describe your products: Roast level, Origin, Bag weight, Organic. You define each one once for your whole store, then give each product its value. Shoppers see the values in a **Specifications** table on the product page, and most attributes also become filters on your product listings, so a shopper can narrow your coffee down to just the dark roasts.

Attributes are facts, not choices to buy. If picking a value changes the price or the stock, like a 12 oz or 2 lb bag, make it a variant instead. Variant options such as Size are already filterable without defining anything here. See [Variants and options](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/product-variants-and-options.md).

## Before you begin

The **Attributes** page is part of the **Product filters** app. If you don't see **Attributes** under **Catalog** in your sidebar, go to **Apps**, find **Product filters** under **All apps** and click **Add**. It is included on every plan.

## Step 1: Create an attribute

1. Go to **Attributes**.
2. Click **Add attribute**.
3. Type a **Name**, for example `Roast level`. Shoppers see it as the filter heading and the spec label.
4. The **Filter key** fills in from the name. It is used in filter links and stays the same if you rename the attribute later, so you can leave it as it is.
5. Choose a **Type**:
   - **Choose from a list**: you set the values and shoppers tick them to filter, like Roast level: `Light`, `Medium`, `Dark`. A product can have more than one.
   - **Number**: like Bag weight. Add a **Unit**, such as `oz`, to show after the number. It is for display only and is never converted.
   - **Yes or no**: like Organic or Fair trade.
   - **Text**: a short one-off, like a farm name. Every product says something different, so it shows in the spec table but is never a filter.
6. For a list, type each value and click **Add value** for the next one. You can give a value a swatch colour.
7. Leave **Let shoppers filter by this** on to make it a filter. Turn it off for a spec worth reading but not worth filtering by. It shows on the product page either way.
8. Leave **Active** on. An inactive attribute stays on the list but shows and filters nowhere.
9. Click **Create**.

Attributes that are filters carry a **Filter** badge on the list. Drag them by the handle to change their order, then click **Save order**.

Under your attributes, **From your product variants** lists the variant options your products already use, such as Size. They are already filters, so don't create them again here.

## Step 2: Set each product's values

1. Go to **Products** and open the product, for example `House Blend Beans`.
2. Find the **Specifications** section. If it isn't on the page, click **Add to this product** below the sections, then click **Add** next to **Specifications** under **On the product page**.
3. Fill in each attribute that applies: click the values for a list, type a number or text, or switch a yes or no on. Leave the rest empty.
4. Click **Save**.

To add an attribute that isn't there, click **Manage them** at the bottom of the section and create it in **Attributes** first. Every product can then use it.

## What shoppers see

- **On the product page**: a **Specifications** table listing each value you set.
- **On product listings**: a filter for each attribute that has **Let shoppers filter by this** on. On your hosted shop it is in the filter panel of your all-products and category pages. In an embedded product grid it is in the filter toolbar.

Number attributes are filters in embedded product grids, but not yet on the hosted shop.

If you have Colour as both an attribute and a variant option, shoppers see one Colour filter with all the values in it, not two.

## Changing an attribute later

Click the pencil next to it. Renaming a value updates every product that uses it. Removing a value removes it from those products, and changing an attribute's **Type** clears it from every product that uses it, so they have to be set again. The drawer warns you before either happens.
