# Connect your own domain

> Put your shop on your own address, like yourshop.com, with www.yourshop.com sending visitors there too. Enter it in Settings > Domain, add a CNAME record for each address at your DNS host, then press Check DNS. HTTPS is set up for you, free.

Help Centre / Domains - Updated 28 October 2026

You can move your Shoprocket shop onto your own domain, like `yourshop.com`. You type the address into **Settings > Domain**, add one DNS record where your domain is managed, and press **Check DNS**. Shoprocket then issues an SSL certificate and renews it for you, so your shop runs on HTTPS with nothing to manage.

Your product pages, sitemap and feeds all switch to the new address as soon as it is live. Your Shoprocket URL keeps working and redirects there permanently, so links that already exist still land on your shop.

## Before you begin

- You need a domain you own, and access to the place its DNS is managed. That is usually where you bought it (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Squarespace Domains) or a DNS service such as Cloudflare.
- Decide on the address your shop will use. We recommend the root domain, `yourshop.com`. If your DNS host can't point a root domain at us, use `www.yourshop.com` instead. Shoprocket tells you which applies once you enter the domain.
- If the domain already runs another website, connecting the same address moves visitors from that site to your shop.

## Step 1: Enter your domain

1. In your dashboard, go to **Settings > Domain**.
2. In **Hostname**, type the address, for example `yourshop.com`.
3. Leave **Also connect www.yourshop.com and send its visitors to yourshop.com** ticked, so shoppers who type either address reach your shop. If your address is `www.yourshop.com`, the box offers `yourshop.com` instead.
4. Click **Save settings**.

The page now shows a **DNS records** card with the records to add, and a **Status** card further down.

## Step 2: Add the CNAME records at your DNS host

Your shop needs one **CNAME** record for each address, so two when you connected both `yourshop.com` and `www.yourshop.com`:

- **Name:** your address, for example `yourshop.com` or `www.yourshop.com`. Some DNS hosts want only the part before your domain, so for the root they use `@` and for www they use `www`.
- **Value** (sometimes called **Target** or **Points to**): `shops.shoprocket.dev`

Copy both from the card with the copy buttons, so nothing is mistyped.

**Set up automatically.** If your DNS host supports it, the card shows a **Set up automatically** button. Sign in at your DNS host, approve the change, and you come back to this page with the record for your shop's address added. Add the second address's record by hand. On a root domain, this replaces whatever the domain shows today with your shop, and the page warns you before you start.

**If your DNS is on Cloudflare,** set each record's proxy status to **DNS only** (grey cloud), not **Proxied** (orange cloud).

**If your DNS host can't point a root domain at us.** A root domain can't normally hold a CNAME record. Cloudflare, Namecheap, Porkbun, DNSimple, Amazon Route 53, Google Cloud DNS, DNS Made Easy and easyDNS work around this, so the root domain works with them. GoDaddy and IONOS can't. When Shoprocket spots one of those, it says so and offers **Use www.yourshop.com instead**: click it, untick the box to also connect `yourshop.com` (your DNS host can't point it at us either), then **Save settings** and add the CNAME for `www`. Forward the root domain at your DNS host, as described below.

## Step 3: Check the connection

DNS changes usually show up within a few minutes, and occasionally take a few hours. Press **Check DNS** to test again. The **Status** card shows one of:

- **Waiting for DNS**: the record has not been found yet, or the certificate is still being issued. A record that is still missing is marked **Not found yet**.
- **Live**: your shop is running on your domain, with HTTPS.
- **Verification failed**: the record isn't resolving. Check the name and value you added, then press **Check DNS** again.

The second address has its own line under the main one, with the same statuses. Once your shop's address is live, visitors to the second address are sent there automatically.

## Making both yourshop.com and www.yourshop.com work

Shoppers type both addresses, so your shop should answer on both. The simplest way is the box under **Hostname**: with it ticked, Shoprocket connects the second address too and sends its visitors to your shop's address, keeping the page and anything after it. Both addresses are then one shop, with one basket and one sign-in, and search engines see one set of pages.

To swap which address is the main one, click **Make www.yourshop.com the main address** in the **Status** card, then **Save settings**. Nothing needs to change at your DNS host. To stop using the second address, untick the box and save.

If your DNS host can't point a root domain at us (GoDaddy, IONOS), your shop goes on `www` and the root domain is forwarded at your DNS host instead. You can also forward the other address yourself rather than ticking the box:

**If your DNS is on Cloudflare:**

1. In Cloudflare, open your domain and go to **DNS > Records**. Add a record for the address you are redirecting, with proxy status set to **Proxied** (orange cloud), because the redirect only runs on proxied records:
   - Redirecting **www** to your root domain: a `CNAME` named `www` with the target `yourshop.com`.
   - Redirecting your **root domain** to www: an `A` record named `@` with the address `192.0.2.1`. That address is a placeholder Cloudflare recommends for records that only redirect, because the redirect answers before anything reaches it.

This is the one exception to the DNS only rule above. The CNAME for your shop's own address stays **DNS only**.
2. Go to **Rules > Redirect Rules** and create a rule from a template: **Redirect from WWW to root**, or **Redirect from root to WWW** if your shop is on www.
3. If you build the rule by hand instead: match requests where **Hostname** equals the address you are redirecting, set the type to **Dynamic**, the expression to `concat("https://yourshop.com", http.request.uri.path)` (with your shop's address), the status code to **301**, and tick **Preserve query string**.
4. Save, then open the redirected address with a page on the end, such as `www.yourshop.com/products`. You should land on the same page at your shop's address.

**If your DNS is somewhere else:** look for a setting called **Forwarding**, **Domain forwarding** or **Redirect**. Forward the address you are not using to your shop's address, and choose a **permanent (301)** redirect. Most registrars include this free. GoDaddy can forward only a root domain this way, which suits a shop on www, the address GoDaddy needs anyway.

## Sending email from your domain too

While you are at your DNS host, you can add the records that let your order emails come from your own address. On the Domain page, click **Add email records** under **Send email from this domain too**. The email records join the same list, so you add everything in one visit. Email verifies separately from the shop, so either can go live first.

## Changing or disconnecting your domain

To move your shop to a different address, type the new one in **Hostname** and click **Save settings**, then add its CNAME records.

To go back to your Shoprocket URL, click **Disconnect** on the DNS records card and confirm. Both addresses are disconnected and your shop returns to its Shoprocket address straight away. You can then delete the CNAME records at your DNS host.
