# Manage your customers

> Everyone who orders from you is added to Customers automatically, guests included. Open a customer to see their paid orders, what they've spent, their addresses, tags and marketing choice, and add customers by hand, edit, archive or export them.

Help Centre / Orders and customers - Updated 29 October 2026

**Customers**, under **Sell** in your sidebar, is your list of everyone who has bought from you. You don't have to add them: the first time someone places an order, Shoprocket adds them, whether they checked out as a guest or signed in. A shopper who orders again with the same email stays one customer, with all their orders together.

The examples use a coffee shop in Portland, OR, selling in USD.

## The customer list

Each row shows the **Customer** (name and email), their **Tags**, how many **Orders** they've placed, their **Total spent** and their **Status**. **Orders** and **Total spent** count paid orders only, so a checkout that was never paid doesn't make someone look like a buyer.

To find people:

- Search by **Name or email…**.
- **Date added** shows customers added in a date range.
- **Status** shows **Active** or **Archived** customers.
- **Tag** shows only customers with one tag. It appears once your store has tags. You can also click a tag on any row.
- **Mode** is **Live** by default. Customers from test orders are hidden until you set it to **Test** or **All**. See [Take a test order](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/take-a-test-order.md).

Click a column header to sort, for example by **Total spent** to see your best customers first.

## A customer's page

Click a customer to open their page. At the top you see their status, email, phone and VAT / tax number if they have one, and a summary such as "3 orders · $96.00 spent".

- **Orders**: their latest paid orders with each one's **Date**, **Payment**, **Fulfillment** and what they **Paid**. A line under the table says what is left out, such as unpaid checkouts or test orders. **View all orders** opens your order list filtered to this customer, those included.
- **Emails**: every email your store has sent them, and whether it arrived.
- **Note**: your internal note, if you've written one.
- **Tags**: click a tag to see everyone else who has it.
- **Default address** and any **Other addresses**.
- **Marketing**: whether they're subscribed to marketing email.

## Add a customer

1. In **Customers**, click **Add Customer**.
2. Under **Details**, fill in **First name**, **Last name**, **Email** and **Phone**. You need at least a name or an email.
3. Add a **VAT / tax number** if they're a business. It is printed on their tax invoices.
4. Under **Addresses**, click **Add address**. With more than one, click **Set as default** on the one to use first.
5. Add an **Internal note** if you like. It is never shown to the customer.
6. Under **Status**, switch on **Accepts marketing** only if the customer opted into marketing email from you.
7. Under **Tags**, type a tag and press Enter. See [Customer tags](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/customer-tags-and-segments.md).
8. Click **Create customer**.

To bring in many customers at once, use [Import customers](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/import-customers.md).

## Edit a customer

Open the customer and click **Edit**. The form is the same as for a new customer. Make your changes and click **Save customer**.

Their past orders keep the address they were placed with. Changing an address here only changes what's saved for next time.

## Archive or delete a customer

- **Archive**: on **Edit**, set **Status** to **Archived** and save. The customer and their orders stay, but archived customers are left out of your email campaigns. Set them back to **Active** at any time.
- **Delete**: on the customer's page, click **Delete customer**, then **Confirm?**. You can only delete a customer who has never placed an order. For someone with orders you're told to archive them instead.

## Work with many customers at once

Tick the box on each row you want. To go beyond this page, click **Select all** in the bar that appears: it takes in every customer matching your filters, for example **Select all 240 customers**. The bar offers:

- **Add tag** and **Remove tag**: pick a tag your store already uses, or type a new one.
- **Export**: download the selected customers as a CSV file.
- **Delete**: customers who have placed orders are kept, and the message tells you how many, so you can archive them instead.

To export everyone, click **Export** at the top of the page. The file has the same columns as the customer import, so you can edit it and import it back. See [Import customers](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/import-customers.md).

## Questions

**Why is someone with 0 orders on my list?**
They may have started a checkout that was never paid, or you added them by hand or by import. Only paid orders are counted.

**Can I change a customer's marketing choice?**
Yes, with **Accepts marketing** on **Edit**. Only switch it on when the customer agreed to hear from you.

**Where are the messages shoppers send me?**
Click **Messages** at the top of the Customers page. See [Answer customer chats and messages](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/message-customers.md).
