# Edit a review

> What you can change in a review and what you cannot. Fix a typo in a customer's review (the customer is told and can undo it), tidy an imported review, or ask the customer to edit their own review when more needs to change.

A review is only worth something to shoppers if it says what the customer meant. So Shoprocket lets you fix a typo in a customer's review, but not rewrite it: the stars and the author stay exactly as the customer gave them, small text fixes are allowed, and the customer is told about every change and can undo it. When more needs to change, you ask the customer to edit it themselves.

## Why the limits

Shoppers trust reviews because they come from other customers. A rating that went up after it was posted, or words the customer never wrote under their name, makes the review misleading, and the **Verified Purchase** badge on it would make a claim that is no longer true. Consumer protection rules in many countries, such as the US Federal Trade Commission's rule on fake reviews and similar rules in the EU and UK, treat writing or changing reviews to misrepresent them as a deceptive practice, and Google and other review platforms refuse altered reviews. Leading review apps work the same way. This is general background, not legal advice.

## What you can change

Open a review from **Reviews**. What you can edit depends on where the review came from, shown as its source:

| | Customer reviews (**Organic** or **Requested**) | Imported reviews (**Imported** or **Manual**) |
|---|---|---|
| Stars | Never | Never |
| Author name and email | Never | Yes |
| Title and text | Typo fixes only, up to 30 characters in total | Yes |
| Status, **Moderation notes**, **Your reply** | Yes | Yes |
| Photos and video | Remove only | Remove only |

**Manual** reviews were typed in by sellers before sellers could no longer add reviews by hand. They are treated like imported ones.

## Fix a typo in a customer's review

1. Open the review from **Reviews**.
2. Correct the title or text. Under the text, the editor counts how many characters now differ from what the customer wrote, for example "4 of 30 characters changed from what the customer wrote."
3. Click **Save review**.

The 30 characters are counted across the title and text together, and always against the customer's original words, so a series of small edits cannot add up to a rewrite. Changing a word back to what they wrote gives those characters back. If a change goes over the limit, the review is not saved and you are asked to use **Ask the customer to edit** instead.

### What the customer is told

When you change a customer's words, Shoprocket emails them, in their language, with the subject "{your shop} edited your review". The email shows what they wrote and how it reads now, with a **Restore my original review** button.

![The edited your review email, showing what the customer wrote and how it reads now, with the Restore my original review button](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/edit-a-review/edit-notice-email.webp)

- **At most one email a day per review.** Several edits close together become one email showing the latest version.
- If you change the text back to exactly what they wrote before the email goes, no email is sent.
- A review with no email address, such as one imported from Etsy, cannot get this email. Imported reviews do not need it, because their text is not limited.

The button opens a page on Shoprocket, not your website, that shows their original review and asks them to confirm. Once they press **Restore my original review**:

- Their original title and text are back, and the review goes on showing in your shop with no change to its stars or status.
- **You can no longer edit that review's text.** The editor says "The customer restored their own words, so the text can no longer be edited here." Moderation, notes and your reply still work, and you can still ask them to edit it.

### How the review is labelled

The review page in your dashboard shows where it stands:

- **Edited by you on** a date: you changed it, and the customer's email has not gone yet.
- **Edited by you, customer notified**: the email has gone.
- **Restored by customer**: they put their own words back.

These labels are for you. Shoppers see the review as it currently reads, with no edit label.

## Ask the customer to edit

For anything bigger than a typo, such as a review that mentions the wrong product or a problem you have since sorted out, ask the customer to change it themselves:

1. Open the review and click **Ask the customer to edit**.
2. The customer is emailed a link with the subject "{your shop} asked you to update your review", and you see "Sent." with their email address.

The link opens a page where they can change their stars, title and text, and it works for 60 days. When they save, the review goes back to **Pending** and the new version becomes their original. It shows in your shop again once you approve it, and the product's star rating updates.

- You can ask once a day per review.
- These emails count toward your shop's 50 review requests a day.
- It works only on a customer's review that has an email address. Imported reviews do not need it, because you can edit their text yourself.

Do not offer anything in return for a better rating. Asking a customer to update their review is fine; paying or rewarding them for a higher one is the kind of review that rules on fake reviews forbid.
