# Import customers from a spreadsheet

> Go to Customers and click Import. Upload a CSV, Excel or JSON file, or a Shopify or WooCommerce customer export as it is, match its columns, confirm your marketing consent and click Start import. Existing customers are matched by email and updated.

Help Centre / Orders and customers - Updated 29 October 2026

Moving to Shoprocket from another platform, or keeping customers in a spreadsheet? Import them in one go, with their addresses, tags, notes and marketing choice. The same import updates customers you already have, matched by email.

## Before you begin

- Your file can be a CSV, an Excel file (`.xlsx`, `.xls`) or a JSON file, up to 10MB. Save CSV files as UTF-8.
- To see the expected layout, go to **Customers**, click **Import**, then click **Download CSV template**.
- **From Shopify or WooCommerce:** upload their customer export as it is. Then bring your order history across too: see [Import orders](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/import-orders.md).
- To edit customers you already have, start from **Export** on the Customers page. The export uses the same columns, so it imports back with no changes to the mapping.
- Only import people who agreed to hear from you. Importing purchased or scraped contact lists is against our Terms of Service.

## How the file is laid out

- The first row must be column headers.
- One customer per row. Every row needs an **Email**: it is how Shoprocket tells customers apart.
- Use `yes` or `no` for **Accepts Marketing**.
- Separate several tags with semicolons, for example `VIP;Wholesale`. Shopify's comma-separated tags work too. Tags that don't exist yet are created.
- Each customer gets one address, saved as their default. Country codes are two letters, like `US` or `CA`.

For example:

```
Email,First Name,Last Name,Phone,Accepts Marketing,Tags,Note,Address Line 1,City,State,Postal Code,Country Code
jane@example.com,Jane,Smith,+1-503-555-0100,yes,VIP;Wholesale,Buys for her cafe,123 SE Hawthorne Blvd,Portland,OR,97214,US
bob@example.com,Bob,Jones,,no,,,,,,,
```

## Step 1: Upload your file

1. Go to **Customers** and click **Import**.
2. Click **Choose a CSV, Excel or JSON file** and pick your file, then click **Upload & continue**.

   Or paste a web address into **Or paste a link to a CSV, Excel or JSON file** and click **Fetch & continue**. The link must open without signing in.

## Step 2: Match your columns

The **Map CSV columns** list shows each column in your file with a few example values. Use **Map to** beside each one to pick the customer field it fills, or **(Skip this column)**. Columns Shoprocket recognises, including Shopify's and WooCommerce's, are matched for you and marked **Auto-detected**; check them anyway.

The fields you can map:

- **Customer**: **Email** (required), **First name**, **Last name**, **Phone**, **Accepts marketing**, **Note** (internal, never shown to the customer) and **Tags**.
- **Address**: **Company**, **Address line 1**, **Address line 2**, **Neighbourhood**, **City**, **State / province**, **Postal / ZIP code**, **Country code** and **Address phone**.

If you picked the wrong file, click **Change file**.

## Step 3: Choose how the import works

Under **Import settings**, pick an **Import mode**:

- **Import all (create + update)**: new customers are created, and customers you already have are updated.
- **Only create new**: rows matching an existing customer are skipped.
- **Only update existing**: only customers that match are updated, and rows without a match are skipped.

Existing customers are matched by **Email**. When a customer is updated:

- Empty cells keep what's already there, so a file with just Email and Phone changes only phone numbers.
- Tags in the file are added. Tags the customer already has are never removed.
- Their default address is updated with the cells you filled in.
- Their marketing choice is never changed. **Accepts marketing** is only recorded for customers the import creates, so a file can't opt someone in, or out, behind their back.

Tick the box confirming that customers marked as opted in to marketing have given their consent to receive marketing emails from your business. You can't start the import without it. Then click **Start import**.

## Step 4: Check the result

The page shows the import's progress, then how many customers were **Created**, **Updated** and **Failed**, and how many were skipped by the import mode. While it runs, **Cancel import** stops it.

A row fails when its email is missing or isn't a valid address. If any rows failed, click **Download error report**, fix those rows in your file and import it again.

Click **View customers** to see them, or **Import another file**. Imported customers are **Active**, and they can sign in to your shop with their email: see [Let customers sign in to see their orders](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/customer-accounts.md).

## Moving from Ecwid?

The **Moving from Ecwid?** card is on the **Import products** page. When it finds customers in your Ecwid store, it brings them across with your products, after you tick the same consent box.
