# Import reviews from another platform

> Bring the reviews you earned on Etsy, Shopify, WooCommerce or anywhere else into Shoprocket from a CSV, Excel, OpenDocument or JSON file, or let the assistant do it. What the file needs, what happens to reviews already in your shop, and why imported reviews are labelled.

Help Centre / Products - Updated 18 October 2026

When you move to Shoprocket, the reviews your customers left on your old platform can come with you. You import them from a file, they attach to your products by name or SKU, and they show in your shop with an **Imported** label so shoppers know where they came from.

## Before you begin

- **Add your products first.** Each review is matched to a product that already exists in your shop. A row whose product cannot be found is reported and skipped.
- **Export your reviews** from your old platform or review app. Most offer a CSV download. Etsy reviews usually come as a JSON file, which works as it is.

## What the file needs

The import takes a CSV, Excel (.xlsx), OpenDocument (.ods) or JSON file of up to 10MB. In a spreadsheet, the first row must be the column headers. A JSON file is a list of reviews, like an Etsy reviews export.

| Column | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Product name or SKU | Yes | Which one is matched is an import setting. Etsy's `listing_title` works as the product name. |
| Rating (1-5) | Yes | A whole number from 1 to 5. |
| Author name | No | Shown as "Anonymous" when blank. |
| Author email | No | Never shown to shoppers. Leave it blank if your export has none. |
| Review title | No | |
| Review content | No | |
| Review date | No | For example 2025-06-15, or a Unix timestamp as Etsy writes it. Today's date when blank. |

Column names are matched for you where they are recognisable (Rating, Stars, Reviewer name, Body and so on), and you can change any match before importing. To start from the right shape, click **Download CSV template** on the import page.

## Import a file

1. In your dashboard, go to **Reviews** and click **Import**.
2. Choose your file, or paste a link to it under **Or paste a link to a CSV, Excel or JSON file** (the link must open without signing in).
3. On **Map columns**, check that each column goes to the right field, or skip it.
4. Under **Import settings**, choose:
   - **Match products by**: **Product name** or **Product SKU**.
   - **Import reviews as**: **Approved (public immediately)**, or **Pending moderation** if you want to look through them first.
   - **Import mode**: **Import all (create + update)**, **Only create new** or **Only update existing**.
5. Click **Start import**. When it finishes you see how many reviews were created, updated and skipped, and the reason for any row that failed.

Each product's star rating updates as its reviews arrive.

### Importing the same file again

A review in the file is the same as one already in your shop when it is for the same product and has the same author email. Without an email, it must have the same author name, the same date and the same text. So importing the same file twice never doubles your reviews.

When a row matches a review you imported before, **Import all (create + update)** and **Only update existing** update its author name, title and text from the file. Empty cells keep what is there. Two things never change on a re-import:

- **The rating.** Once a review exists, its stars are fixed.
- **A review a customer wrote in Shoprocket.** If the matching review was written by the customer through your shop, the row is reported as an error and the customer's review is left exactly as they wrote it.

**Only create new** skips every row that matches an existing review.

## Etsy reviews

Etsy never gives sellers their buyers' email addresses, so an Etsy export has none. That is fine: reviews import without an email.

- Use the export as it is: a JSON file, or the JSON link from a review export tool.
- If the file names products by `listing_title`, match products by **Product name**, and make sure your product names in Shoprocket match the Etsy listing titles.
- If it names them only by `listing_id`, map that column to the product and match by **Product SKU**, with each product's SKU set to its Etsy listing ID. Otherwise each row reports "product not found".
- A review without an email cannot be sent a reply email, so when you reply to one, your reply only shows in the shop.

## Let the assistant import

In the dashboard assistant, attach your file (or paste a link to it) and ask it to import your reviews. It shows a card with how many reviews will be added, which rows will not and why, and which column goes where. Type IMPORT to confirm.

- The assistant only ever adds new reviews. It never updates ones already in your shop.
- Reviews it imports arrive as **Pending**, so you approve them in **Reviews** before they show.
- An assistant import cannot be undone in one step. To remove reviews afterwards, delete them from **Reviews**.

## Why imported reviews are labelled

Imported reviews are never marked **Verified Purchase**, and shoppers see an **Imported** label on them, in every language your shop sells in.

![An imported review on a product page in the shop, with the Imported label after the reviewer's name](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/import-reviews/imported-review.webp)

The **Verified Purchase** badge means the reviewer bought the product from your shop, and Shoprocket can only prove that for orders placed here. An imported review may be completely genuine, but nothing in the file proves who wrote it, so the label tells shoppers it came from somewhere else. This is also what the major review apps do, and it keeps you on the right side of rules against misleading reviews.

Imported reviews do count toward your star rating, and they are sent to Google with your other reviews. See [Star ratings on Google](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/google-review-stars.md).

After an import, you can tidy an imported review's author and text, but not its stars. See [Edit a review](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/edit-a-review.md).

## Why you cannot add a review by hand

There is no button to type in a review yourself. A review written by the seller is not a customer review, however faithfully it repeats what the customer said, and adding one is exactly what rules on fake reviews forbid.

Instead, click **Request a review** on the **Reviews** screen and enter the customer's name and email. They get an email with a link to review the product in their own words. See [Collect and show product reviews](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/product-reviews.md).

Reviews that sellers typed in before this changed are kept, show **Manual** as their source in your dashboard, and carry the **Imported** label in your shop. They are not sent to Google.
