# Set up local pickup

> Let customers collect their order from your shop, studio or warehouse instead of paying for shipping. Add a pickup location, and checkout offers Ship or Pickup.

Help Centre / Shipping - Updated 29 October 2026

Local pickup lets a customer buy online and collect the order from you in person, with no delivery address and no shipping charge. You add the places they can collect from, checkout offers **Ship** or **Pickup**, and when the order is packed you mark it ready and Shoprocket emails the customer where to come.

It suits any seller with a door customers can walk through: a shop, a café, a studio, a market stall with fixed hours, or a warehouse with a collection point. It works the same on your Shoprocket shop and in every embed on your own website.

## Before you begin

- You need at least one product that ships. Pickup is a delivery choice, so a cart with nothing to ship, such as only digital downloads, never shows it.
- Have each location's full address to hand. The street, city and country are required, because customers are told where to go and the order is taxed there.
- Decide what to tell people when they arrive: your opening hours, which door to use, and what to bring. These go in the email they get when the order is ready.

## Add a pickup location

1. In your dashboard, go to **Settings > Shipping**.
2. Scroll to **Local pickup and delivery** and click **Add pickup location** (or **Add location** if you already have one).
3. Enter a **Location name**. This is what customers see at checkout, so make it recognisable, for example "Alberta Street shop" rather than "Location 1".
4. Check the address. A new location starts from your business address, so change it if this one is somewhere else.
5. Under **Pickup details**, leave **Customers can collect orders here** switched on, and choose **Usually ready in**: 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 24 hours, 2-4 days or 5 or more days. Customers read this as a promise, so pick the time you can keep on a busy day.
6. Leave **Price (blank = free)** empty to make pickup free, which is what most customers expect. Enter an amount if you want to charge for it.
7. Write your **Pickup instructions**: opening hours, where to go, and what to bring.
8. Click **Create location**.

![The New pickup location form with the location name, address, ready time, price and pickup instructions filled in](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/local-pickup/add-location.webp)

Your new location is listed under **Local pickup and delivery**, with its address, ready time and price. The moment one location is active, checkout starts offering Pickup.

![The Local pickup and delivery section of Shipping settings, listing two active locations in Portland with their address, ready time and price](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/local-pickup/pickup-locations.webp)

Add a location for each place customers can collect from. To change one later, click its name, edit it and click **Save location**.

## What your customers see at checkout

When a store has an active pickup location, the **Delivery** section of checkout opens with a **Ship** / **Pickup** choice. Ship works exactly as before. When the customer chooses **Pickup**:

- The delivery address form and shipping rates disappear. They give their name (and a phone number, if your checkout asks for one), and a billing address with their payment details.
- Your locations are listed with their address, how soon an order is usually ready, and the price (**Free** if you left it blank). The first location is chosen for them, and they can pick another.
- The order summary shows **Pickup** in place of shipping.

![Checkout with Pickup chosen: the customer's name and phone number, and two pickup locations with Aurora Roastery selected, usually ready in 2 hours, free](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/local-pickup/checkout-pickup.webp)

A store with no active location sees no Ship / Pickup choice at all, so nothing changes until you add one.

After paying, the order confirmation email tells the customer where they will collect it and how soon it is usually ready, and that you will email them when it is.

## Let customers choose a pickup date

If you bake to order or are only open some days, a location can ask customers which day they will collect.

1. Open the location from **Settings > Shipping**.
2. Under **Pickup dates**, switch on **Ask shoppers for a pickup date**.
3. Choose the days you are **Open for pickup on**, the **Minimum notice (days)** you need (1 means tomorrow at the earliest), and how many days ahead customers can book.
4. Add any **Closed dates**, such as holidays, and click **Save location**.

![The Pickup dates card with pickup on Tuesday to Saturday, 1 day's notice, bookable up to 14 days ahead and one closed date](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/local-pickup/pickup-dates.webp)

At checkout, choosing that location adds a required **Pickup date** list holding only the days you are open, counted in your store's time zone. The date shows on the order, in the orders list (sort or filter by **Pickup date**), in the confirmation and Ready for pickup emails, and on the invoice.

## Make a product pickup only

Some products should never go in the post: a cake, a fragile glass piece, a large plant. You can choose, product by product, how customers can get it.

1. Open the product from **Products**.
2. In the **Shipping** section, find **How can shoppers get this?** and untick the ways it cannot go. For a collection-only product, untick **Shipping** and **Local delivery** and leave **Pickup** ticked.
3. Click **Save**.

![The Shipping section of a product with How can shoppers get this? showing Pickup ticked and Shipping and Local delivery unticked](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/local-pickup/product-pickup-only.webp)

Every product starts with all three ticked, and at least one always stays ticked. The section only appears on a product that ships, because a digital product is never delivered.

What customers see:

- The product page says **Pickup only**, and so does the line in the cart and in the checkout summary.
- At checkout, the **Ship** choice disappears for any cart holding that product, with a short reason such as "Macaron tower is pickup only", and the first pickup location is chosen for them. Other products in the same cart are collected with it.
- If a cart mixes products that share no way of getting them, for example a pickup-only cake and a shipping-only sofa, checkout says so and asks the customer to remove one, instead of showing an empty list.

![Checkout for a cart with a pickup-only plant: no Ship choice, the reason Green plant with white ceramic pot is pickup only, and the pickup location already chosen](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/local-pickup/checkout-pickup-only.webp)

A pickup-only product still needs an active pickup location to be bought. If you switch every location off, customers are told that none of your delivery options work for their cart.

You can also set this in bulk with a product CSV import: the **Delivery Methods** column takes `shipping`, `pickup` and `local_delivery`, separated by `;`. Leave it blank for all three.

## Get a pickup order ready and hand it over

A pickup order is fulfilled in two steps instead of being shipped: first you tell the customer it is ready, then you record that they collected it. Open the order from **Orders** and the card at the top reads **Pickup at** your location, with the two buttons on its right. Pickup orders never offer a shipping label.

![A paid pickup order: the progress bar shows Placed and Paid, with Ready for pickup next, and the buttons Mark as picked up and Mark as ready for pickup](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/local-pickup/order-mark-ready.webp)

### Mark an order as ready for pickup

1. Pack the order and put it somewhere you can find it.
2. Click **Mark as ready for pickup**.
3. Leave **Notify customer by email** ticked, and click **Mark as ready**. Click **Preview** beside it to see the email first.

![The Mark as ready for pickup dialog, saying the customer can collect it from Aurora Roastery, with Notify customer by email ticked](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/local-pickup/ready-dialog.webp)

The order's progress moves on to **Picked up**, which reads "Waiting at" your location until the customer arrives, and the timeline records that you marked it ready.

### Mark an order as picked up

When the customer has collected the order, click **Mark as picked up**. The order becomes **Fulfilled**, and a **Collections** card on the order lists it as "Picked up" with the number of items. No second email is sent: they are holding the order.

![The same order after it was marked ready: Ready for pickup is complete, Picked up reads Waiting at Aurora Roastery, and Mark as picked up is the main button](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/local-pickup/order-mark-picked-up.webp)

If a customer collects on the spot, before you marked the order ready, click **Mark as picked up** straight away. If you marked an order picked up by mistake, open the **Collections** card on the order and click **Undo pickup**.

## The Ready for pickup email

When you mark an order ready with the box ticked, the customer gets an email with the subject "Your Aurora Coffee Co order #1042 is ready for pickup". It carries your location's name and address, your pickup instructions, the items to collect, and a link to their order status page, and it asks them to bring their order number.

![The Ready for pickup email: the location name and address, the pickup instructions, the items to collect and a link to the order status](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/local-pickup/ready-email.webp)

The customer's order status page follows along too: "Order confirmed" while you prepare it, then "Ready for pickup" with the location, then "Picked up".

To change the wording of this email, go to **Settings > Email templates** and choose **Ready for pickup**.

## How pickup orders are taxed

A pickup order is taxed at the pickup location's address, because that is where the customer takes the goods. An address the customer typed before switching to Pickup is ignored. Shopify taxes pickup orders the same way.

So if you collect sales tax or VAT in more than one region, each location is taxed where it is, and a customer who lives elsewhere pays the rate for the place they collect from.

## Turn off or delete a location

- **To pause a location**, for a holiday or a refit, open it, switch **Active** off in the bar at the bottom and click **Save location**. It stops showing at checkout and comes back when you switch it on.
- **To remove a location for good**, click the bin icon beside it under **Local pickup and delivery**, and confirm.

Orders already placed are not affected either way. Each order keeps the name, address and instructions it was placed with, so moving or renaming a location never changes where an existing order says to collect.

## Things to know

- **Each product chooses its own ways.** By default every product that ships can be shipped, picked up or delivered locally. Narrow it on the product, as above. Variants follow their product.
- **Stock is shared.** Locations do not hold their own stock, so a product in stock can be chosen for pickup at any of them.
- **Dates, not time slots.** A location can ask for a pickup day, as above, but not a time of day, and there is no limit on pickups per day: add a closed date when you are full.
- **Local delivery uses the same locations.** Open a location to add the nearby areas you deliver to yourself. For a base you only deliver from, switch off **Customers can collect orders here** and it is never offered for pickup.
- **Express checkout buttons ship the order.** Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal at the top of checkout ask for a delivery address, so a customer who wants to collect pays with the form below. A cart that cannot be shipped, such as one holding a pickup-only product, does not show them at all.
- **Subscriptions renew as pickup.** A subscription bought with pickup renews at the pickup price, with no address.
