# Add-ons and personalisation > Add Buyer input fields to a product to ask shoppers a question before they add it to the cart, like a name to engrave, a gift note, a photo or a paid extra. Their answers appear on the order, and any extra charge is added to the item's price. Help Centre / Products - Updated 29 October 2026 Some products need a little extra from the shopper before they buy: a name to print on a mug, a note to put in a gift box, or a yes or no to an extra like gift wrap. In Shoprocket these are **Buyer input fields**. You add questions to a product, and shoppers answer them on the product page before they click add to cart. Each question can be required or optional, can cost extra, and can show only when the shopper picks a certain answer to an earlier question. The answers travel with the item onto the order, its emails and the invoice. ## Before you begin - Buyer input fields work on physical, digital and bundle products. They aren't available on gift cards. - If the extra is really a different version of the product, with its own price and stock (like a 12 oz or 2 lb bag), use variants instead. See [Variants and options](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/product-variants-and-options.md). ## Step 1: Add Buyer input fields to the product 1. Go to **Products** and open the product, for example `Portland Morning Blend, 12 oz`. 2. Below the sections, click **Add to this product**. 3. Under **How it sells**, find **Buyer input fields** and click **Add**. Type the **Question** shoppers will see, for example `Gift note`. 2. Pick an **Answer type**: - **Short text**: a line of text, like a name to engrave. - **Paragraph**: a longer message, like a gift note. - **Dropdown**: shoppers pick one of your options, like a grind size. - **Checkbox**: a single tick, like `Add gift wrap`. - **File upload (photo or PDF)**: shoppers attach a photo or a PDF, up to 10 MB. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, iPhone (HEIC) photos and PDFs are accepted. 3. Tick **Required** if shoppers must answer before they can add the product to the cart. Required questions show a `*` next to them on the product page. To ask more than one thing, click **Add question**. A product can have up to 20 questions. Use the arrows on the right of a question to move it up or down, and the bin to remove it. ## Step 3: Add an extra charge (optional) Leave the charge empty for a free question. To charge for it: - For a **Short text**, **Paragraph** or **File upload** question, type an amount in **Extra charge when answered**, for example `5.00` for engraving. It is charged only when the shopper answers. - For a **Checkbox**, type an amount in **Extra charge when ticked**, for example `4.00` for gift wrap. - For a **Dropdown**, each option has its own **Extra charge**. Type an **Option 1** name, then click **Add option** for each further choice, up to 50. Leave an option's charge empty if it costs nothing. Shoppers see the extra charge next to the question. It is added to the price of each unit, so two engraved mugs at `5.00` each add `10.00`. ## Step 4: Show a question only when it applies (optional) You can hide a question until the shopper picks a certain answer to an earlier one. For example, show `Gift note` only when `Add gift wrap` is ticked. 1. Put the controlling question first: a **Dropdown** or **Checkbox** question, higher up the list. 2. On the later question, open **Show this question** and pick the answer it depends on, such as **When Add gift wrap is ticked**. Choose **Always** to show it every time. **Show this question** only appears on a question that has a dropdown or checkbox question above it. The questions now show on the product page in your shop and in any product embed. ## Where the answers go When a shopper buys the product, each answer is saved with that item: - Open the order from **Orders** to see the answers under the item, with any extra charge next to each one. An uploaded file shows as a link you can open. - The answers also appear in the order emails and on the invoice.
