# Product SEO and search preview > Open a product's SEO section to set the Meta title and Meta description search engines show, change its URL handle, and check the Search Preview. Leave them blank and your shop uses the product's name and short description. Help Centre / Products - Updated 29 October 2026 When someone finds your product in Google, they see a title, a web address and a line or two of description. The **SEO** section of each product lets you write those, so the result reads well and gets the click. You don't have to: every product works without it, and your shop fills the gaps from the product itself. ## Step 1: Open the SEO section 1. Open the product in **Products**. 2. Scroll to the **SEO** section and click its heading. When closed, it tells you whether a title and description are set, for example **Title set · description empty**. ## Step 2: Write the meta title and description - **Meta title** is the clickable headline in search results. Aim for 50 to 60 characters; the count under the box keeps track. For example: `Portland Morning Blend Coffee Beans, 12 oz | Aurora Coffee`. - **Meta description** is the text under the headline. Aim for 140 to 160 characters. Say what it is and why it's worth buying, for example: `A smooth medium roast with notes of cocoa and toasted hazelnut. Roasted weekly in Portland, OR and shipped within two days.` If you leave them blank, your hosted shop uses the product's name followed by your shop's name as the title, and the **Short description** (or, without one, the start of the **Description**) as the description. As you type, the **Search Preview** below shows how the product may look in Google. A new product's handle is made from its name when you create it, and is shown under **Basics** as the **URL Slug**. On a saved product, change it in **URL handle** in the **SEO** section. Spaces and capitals are tidied up for you when you click away. The hint under the box shows the old and new address, for example `/products/house-blend will redirect to /products/portland-morning-blend`. The old address keeps working: once you save, it redirects to the new one, so links people saved and existing search results still land on the product. With the **Redirects** app added on the **Apps** page, you can see and manage these redirects in **Settings > Redirects**. ## Step 4: Save Click **Save** in the bar at the top. ## Good to know - These settings are for your hosted shop's product page. A product embedded on your own website is part of your website's page, so that page's title and description come from your website. - Writing your shop in more than one language? Write the SEO text in your store's default language. A small language tag beside the section's title reminds you which one that is when your dashboard is in a different language. - The **Brand** under **Basics** is also sent to search engines with the product. - The main picture is the one shown when the product's link is shared.
