# Product variants and options > Tick This product has variants under Variants, add options such as Size or Grind with their values, and Shoprocket makes a variant for every combination. Give each one its own price, stock, SKU and picture, then click Save. Help Centre / Products - Updated 29 October 2026 When a product comes in more than one version, like a bag of coffee in two sizes and two grinds, you sell it as one product with variants rather than four separate products. Shoppers pick their choice on the product page, and each variant can have its own price, stock, SKU, barcode and picture. In Shoprocket you describe the **options** (Size, Grind) and their **values** (250g, 1kg; Whole bean, Ground), and every combination becomes a **variant** automatically. Two sizes and two grinds make four variants. ## Before you begin - Variants are for **Physical** products. You can't add variants to a digital product or a bundle. - A product can have up to 3 options, up to 20 values per option and up to 250 variants in all. ## Step 1: Turn on variants 1. Open the product in **Products**, or start a new one with **Create Product**. 2. Open the **Variants** section and tick **This product has variants**. Two areas appear: **Product Options**, where you list the options, and **Inventory & Pricing**, where the variants they make are listed. The **Inventory** section disappears, and **Pricing** says prices are set per variant, because each variant now carries its own. If you had already typed a price, every new variant starts with it. Stock, SKU and barcode you had typed go to the first variant only, and the others start at zero stock: 20 bags typed before variants are 20 bags, not 20 of each. ## Step 2: Add options and values 1. Under **Product Options**, type the first option's name in **Option name (e.g. Size, Colour or Material)**, for example `Size`. 2. Type its first value in **Value (e.g. Small, Red)**, for example `250g`. 3. Click **Add Value** for each further value, for example `1kg`. 4. Click **Add Option** to add the next option, for example `Grind` with `Whole bean` and `Ground`. As you type, Shoprocket suggests option names and values you already use on other products. Picking the same spelling each time (always `Colour`, never `Color` on one product and `Colour` on another) keeps your shop's filters tidy. Drag the handle beside an option or value to change its order. That is the order shoppers see. To give a value a colour, click the small square beside it and pick one. Your shop can then show it as a colour swatch. Click the **×** on the square to clear it. To remove a value or a whole option, click its bin icon and then **Confirm?** to confirm. The variants that used it go too. ![The Variants section with This product has variants ticked, Size and Grind options under Product Options, and the variants they make under Inventory & Pricing](https://v3.shoprocket.io/img/help/product-variants-and-options/variant-options.webp) ## Step 3: Set each variant's price and stock Under **Inventory & Pricing**, each variant has a row with its values, a **Price**, a **Cost** and a **Stock** box. - Type the **Price** for each, for example `16.00` for 250g and `48.00` for 1kg. - Type how many you have in **Stock**. Click **∞** for a variant that never runs out. - **Cost** is optional and never shown to shoppers. With two or more options, the variants are grouped under the values of one option. Choose which with **Group by**, and click **Expand all** to see every variant. Typing a **Price** or **Cost** in a group's own row and clicking away applies it to every variant in that group, which is quick when all the 1kg bags cost the same. **Search variants…** finds a variant by its value, SKU or barcode. ## Step 4: Add details and a picture - **Details:** click the settings icon at the end of a variant's row to open **Variant details**. Here you set its **SKU** and **Barcode**, its **Weight & dimensions**, and its **Unit price**. Click **Done** to close it. - **Weight for a whole group:** the settings icon in a group's row sets the weight and dimensions for every variant in it at once. - **Picture:** click the picture square at the start of a variant's row and pick one of the product's pictures, or click **Upload** to add a new one. When a shopper picks that variant, the product page shows that picture. Nothing changes in your shop until you do. You can come back and add, rename or remove options and values at any time. Renaming a value keeps its variant, along with its price and stock. ## Going back to a single version Untick **This product has variants**. The product keeps the first variant's price and stock as its own, and the options go.
