# Sell a product on subscription

> Open the product, click Add to this product, choose Subscription, and add one or more subscription options, each a schedule and a percent off. Shoppers then pick One time or a schedule on the product page, and renewals are charged automatically.

Help Centre / Products - Updated 29 October 2026

A subscription lets a shopper buy a product once and have it charged and sent again on a schedule, for example a bag of coffee every month. You don't create a separate subscription product: you add subscription options to a product you already sell, and shoppers choose between buying it once and subscribing.

The examples use a Portland coffee shop selling `Portland Morning Blend, 12 oz` at `16.00`, with a monthly subscription at 10% off.

## Before you begin

- Subscriptions are on the **Business** and **Plus** plans. On a lower plan, the **Subscription** row in **Add to this product** shows the plan it needs.
- Connect a payment gateway that can charge a saved card or account for renewals. In **Settings > Payments**, these gateways show a **Recurring** tag: Stripe, Mollie, Square and Authorize.net, plus PayPal when PayPal has approved your account for repeat payments. Shoppers can't check out a subscription with a payment method that can't renew, and they can't pay for one offline.
- Subscriptions work on physical and digital products. Bundles and gift cards can't be sold on subscription.

## Step 1: Add the Subscriptions section to the product

1. Go to **Products** and open the product.
2. Below the sections, click **Add to this product**.
3. Under **How it sells**, find **Subscription** (Charge for this on a repeating cadence instead of once) and click **Add**.

A **Subscriptions** section opens on the product, with one subscription option ready to fill in.

## Step 2: Set up a subscription option

Each row is one schedule the shopper can choose. Fill in:

- **Renews**: **Daily**, **Weekly**, **Monthly** or **Yearly**.
- **Every**: how many of those between charges. `1` with **Monthly** is every month; `2` with **Weekly** is every 2 weeks.
- **% off each**: the discount a subscriber gets on every charge, from `0` to `99`. Leave it blank or type `0` to offer the subscription for convenience with no discount.
- **Min payments**: optional. How many times the shopper commits to pay before they can cancel. Leave it blank to let them cancel any time.
- **Max payments**: optional. The subscription ends by itself after this many payments. Leave it blank to keep it going until it is cancelled.

Under the row you see what the shopper will pay, for example **Monthly · $14.40 each**. On a product with variants, each variant takes the discount off its own price, and the line reads **from** the cheapest one.

To offer more schedules, click **Add subscription option**. A product can have up to 6, and no two can renew on the same schedule. To remove one, click the bin icon at the end of its row.

## Step 3: Decide whether it can still be bought once

By default, shoppers can still buy the product one time. Turn on **Subscription only** if you only want to sell it on a schedule: the one-off purchase is removed, so it can only be bought by subscribing. This switch only works once the product has at least one subscription option.

## Step 4: Save

Click **Save** in the bar at the top. If a subscription option has a problem, such as a minimum that is higher than the maximum, the section stays open and tells you what to fix before you can save.

## What shoppers see

On the product page, shoppers see **Purchase options**: **One time** (unless the product is subscription only), and one choice for each schedule, with **Save 10%** beside any that has a discount. They pick one before adding the product to their cart.

When they check out, the first payment is taken straight away. After that, Shoprocket charges the same payment method on schedule, and each renewal arrives in your **Orders** as a new order, with tax and shipping worked out the same way as any other order.

A subscriber keeps the price and terms they signed up on. If you later change the product's price, the discount or the schedule, people who already subscribed stay on what they agreed to; new subscribers get the new terms.

## Trying it out

**Test payment** can't pay for a subscription, because it can't save a card for renewals, so a test order with a subscription in the cart is refused at checkout. You can still place a test order for the one-time purchase.

## Removing subscriptions from a product

In the **Subscriptions** section, delete each subscription option with the bin icon at the end of its row, then click **Save**. (While you are adding the section for the first time, a **Remove subscriptions from this product** link at the bottom of the section does the same in one click.) The product goes back to being bought once. People who already subscribed keep their subscriptions; manage or cancel those on the **Subscriptions** screen.

## Seeing your subscribers

The list of everyone who has subscribed lives on its own **Subscriptions** screen, under **Sell** in the sidebar. It belongs to the **Subscriptions** app: switch it on from the **Apps** page by clicking **Add** on **Subscriptions**. It switches itself on once your first customer subscribes.
