# Set up your store

> Create your account, name your store, and answer up to three quick questions. Shoprocket shows you a plan, and when you press Start it saves your answers, copies your products from an old shop if you have one, and takes you to your dashboard.

Setting up a store takes a few minutes. You create an account, give your store a name, and answer up to three questions about how you sell. Shoprocket then shows you a plan of exactly what it will do, and nothing happens until you press **Start**.

## Before you begin

- Have your store's name ready. You can change it later in **Settings > General**.
- If you already sell on another platform, have your shop's address to hand, for example `www.yourshop.com`. Shoprocket can copy your products from Shopify, WooCommerce, Squarespace and Big Cartel straight from the address. For other platforms you bring them over from a download file.
- If you want to sell on a website you already have, have its address ready too.

## Step 1: Create your account

1. Go to the [sign-up page](https://app-v3.shoprocket.io/signup).
2. Fill in **Your name**, **Email** and **Password** (at least 8 characters).
3. Click **Create account**.

## Step 2: Name your store

1. On **Create a store**, type your store's name in **Store name**, for example `Rose City Candles`.
2. Click **Create store**.

Your store's name also becomes part of its Shoprocket shop address.

## Step 3: Answer the questions

The screen shows which step you are on, for example **Step 1 of 3**. Click **Back** to change an earlier answer.

**Where will people buy from you?** Pick one, then click **Continue**:

- **On my own website**: add products and checkout to the site you already have.
- **On a Shoprocket shop**: Shoprocket builds you a shop that works on a Shoprocket address straight away, and on your own domain when you want.
- **Both**: a shop of your own, plus products on your website, with one catalogue and one set of orders.

**Do you already sell somewhere?** Pick one, then click **Continue**:

- **Yes, on another platform**: type the address in **Your shop's address** and click **Look**. Shoprocket reads your shop and tells you what it found, for example how many products it can copy.
- **I have a spreadsheet**: a CSV or Excel file with your products in it.
- **No, I'm starting fresh**: you add your first product yourself after set-up.

**Which website are we adding to?** You only see this question if you chose **On my own website** or **Both**. Type the address in **Website address** and click **Look**. Shoprocket says what the site is built on, so the install steps you get later are the right ones. If it guessed wrong, pick the right one under **Not right? Pick what it's built on:**, then click **Continue**. No website yet? Click **I'll add my website later** and set-up carries on without one.

If your website is already a Shopify, BigCommerce, Etsy or Big Cartel shop, Shoprocket won't add a second checkout to it. It offers **Sell on a Shoprocket shop instead**, and you can point your domain at that shop when you are ready.

**Or skip the questions.** On the first question, click **Or describe your business in a sentence and we'll answer for you**, write a sentence such as "I sell hand-poured candles on Etsy and want them on my Squarespace site", and click **Answer the questions for me**. Anything the sentence doesn't settle is asked as normal.

## Step 4: Check the plan and press Start

**Here's the plan** lists, in order, what Start will do. Depending on your answers it includes:

- Copying your products from your old shop, or importing them from a download or spreadsheet on the next screen, or adding your first product.
- **Build your shop and write its homepage**, if you sell on a Shoprocket shop. The homepage stays a draft until you publish it. It's left out when you're starting fresh and haven't described your business, because there's nothing to write it from yet.
- **Add Shoprocket to** your website, if you sell on your own site.
- **Keep the store in test mode for now.**

Below the list, **Prices in** shows your store's currency, for example US Dollar (USD), and **Selling from** shows your country. Shoprocket picks these from your old shop or from where you are. Click **Change** next to either to pick another.

If your old shop's prices are in a different currency from the one you choose, the plan warns you: prices come across as the same numbers, in your new currency.

When the plan looks right, click **Start**. To go back and answer differently, click **Change my answers**.

## What happens when you press Start

The screen changes to **Setting up your store** and ticks off each item as it finishes. It usually takes a minute or two, and writing your homepage is the slow part.

- **Your answers are saved**, along with your currency and country.
- **Your products are copied** from your old shop, if Shoprocket could read it. A big shop keeps copying in the background, and products appear in **Products** as they arrive.
- **Your shop's homepage is written** as a draft, if you sell on a Shoprocket shop. With nothing to write it from yet, your shop keeps the starting theme's homepage, and you write yours in the builder later.
- **Your store stays in test mode.** Nothing charges a real card until you set up payments and go live.

If a step doesn't finish, the screen says so, and you can do that step from your dashboard instead.

## Where you land

- If you chose a spreadsheet, or a platform Shoprocket can't read from its address, you land on the product import screen to upload your file.
- Otherwise you land on your dashboard's **Overview**.

## Your next steps on the Overview

The top of the Overview shows a **Set up your store** card with your progress. Under **Start here** it names the one thing to do next for the way you sell:

- **Build your shop**, with **Open the builder**, if you sell on a Shoprocket shop.
- **Add your shop to your website**, with **Get the embed code**, if you sell on your own site.

Below that are the steps between you and your first real order: **Add your first product**, **Set up payments**, **Set up delivery**, putting your shop on your site or opening your hosted shop, and **Go live**. Each step ticks itself off when it is done. The card also offers **Place a test order**, so you can try your checkout before you open.

If you sell on a Shoprocket shop, the card also shows **Your homepage is a draft**. Click **Review** to open it in the builder, or **Publish** to put it on your shop as it is.
