# Track stock and inventory > Type how many you have in Stock on a physical product or on each variant, or click the ∞ button for unlimited stock. Shoppers can only buy what is not already held by another order, and the product shows as sold out when nothing is left. Help Centre / Products - Updated 29 October 2026 Shoprocket keeps count of what you have on the shelf and stops selling when it runs out, so you never take an order you can't fill. You set the count on each physical product, or on each of its variants, and Shoprocket holds units for orders as they come in. The examples use a coffee shop in Portland, OR, with 40 bags of its house blend in the stockroom. ## Before you begin - Stock is for physical products. A digital product has no **Inventory** section, and a bundle takes its stock from the products inside it (see [Sell product bundles](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/product-bundles.md)). - To sell licence keys from a list you paste in, the key list can set the stock for you. See [Licence keys](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/licence-keys.md). ## Step 1: Set the stock on a product 1. Go to **Products** and open the product. 2. In the **Inventory** section, type how many you have in **Stock**, for example `40`. 3. Click **Save**. The same section holds **SKU** and **Barcode (GTIN)**. Both are optional. If the product has variants, the **Inventory** section isn't shown. Each variant row under **Variants** has its own **Stock** box instead, so you can count the 12 oz and 2 lb bags separately. The box then reads **Unlimited**, orders keep going through and the product never sells out. Click **∞** again to go back to counting; the number you had is still there. Products and variants with unlimited stock show **∞** in the **Stock** column of your product list. ## How stock is held when someone orders Shoppers can buy what you have in **Stock** minus whatever is already held for placed orders. Adding to a cart holds nothing; the hold starts when the shopper places the order at checkout. - **Card and online payments:** the units are held for 30 minutes while the shopper pays. Once the order is paid the hold is permanent. If it isn't paid in time, the units go back on sale. - **Bank transfer, cash on delivery and pay by invoice:** the units stay held until the order is paid or cancelled, however long that takes. - **Cancelling an order** puts its held units back on sale. The number in **Stock** is what is physically on your shelf, so it doesn't drop when an order is placed. It drops when you fulfil the order, because that is when the goods actually leave. Until then the units count as held, and shoppers can't buy them. When you refund an order, switch on **Restock items** in the refund panel to put the units back. Leave it off for a damaged return. ## Sold out and running low When everything you have is held or sold, shoppers see the product as **Sold out** and checkout won't let anyone buy more than is left. To see what needs restocking: - On your **Overview**, the live queues show how many variants are sold out and how many are running low. A variant is running low when it has 5 or fewer left. Click either one to open the matching product list. - In **Products**, set the **Stock** filter to **Sold out** or **Running low**.
