# Sell to businesses and trade customers

> Tag your trade customers, give them a discount only they can use, show them prices without tax, take their VAT number at checkout and print it on their invoice, offer bulk price breaks, and let them pay by bank transfer. What Shoprocket does for B2B today, and what it doesn't yet.

Help Centre / Orders and customers - Updated 29 October 2026

Shoprocket has no separate wholesale mode. You sell to businesses with the same shop, using a handful of settings that together cover what trade buyers usually need. This article puts them in one place.

The examples use a coffee shop in Portland, OR, that also sells 2 lb bags of beans to local cafes.

## What you can do today

| A trade buyer wants | Use |
|---|---|
| A lower price than the public | A discount limited to customers tagged `Trade` |
| A better price for bigger orders | Volume price breaks on the product |
| To see prices without tax | Price display set to Shopper chooses, with ex-tax prices for tagged customers |
| Their VAT or tax number on the invoice | Collect VAT / tax ID at checkout, or add it to their customer record |
| No VAT on cross-border EU sales | Reverse charge for validated EU business buyers |
| E-invoice files for their books | The B2B app's e-invoices |
| To pay by bank transfer | A manual payment method |
| A price agreed one order at a time | Quotes & enquiries |

## Before you begin

Most of these use **customer tags** and **customer accounts**. A tag only counts once the customer is signed in to their account in your shop, so ask your trade buyers to create one. See [Customer tags and segments](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/customer-tags-and-segments.md) and [Customer accounts](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/customer-accounts.md).

1. Go to **Customers** and click **Tags**, and add a tag such as `Trade`.
2. Open each trade customer and add the tag to them.

## Give trade customers their own discount

1. Go to **Discounts** and create a discount, for example 20% off everything.
2. Under **Who can use it**, choose **Customers with tags** and pick `Trade` under **Customers with any of these tags**.
3. Save it.

Only signed-in customers with the tag can use it. Guests never qualify.

## Offer price breaks on bigger orders

On a product, click **Add to this product** and add **Volume price breaks**. Each tier has **Buy at least** and **% off each**, for example `10` and `15`. You can add up to 10 tiers.

Every variant of the product counts toward the quantity, and each takes the discount off its own price. Discount codes still apply on top. Shoppers see the tiers on the product page under "Buy more, save more", and the cart shows the old price beside the new one.

Volume price breaks apply to every shopper, not only trade customers.

## Show prices without tax

Trade buyers usually think in prices before tax. In **Settings > Taxes**, with **Collect tax at checkout** on:

1. Set **Price display** to **Shopper chooses - an inc/ex tax switch**.
2. In **Show prices without tax by default to customers tagged**, pick `Trade`.
3. Save.

Tagged customers see prices without tax once they sign in. They can still use the switch, and their own choice wins. This only changes how prices are shown: what checkout charges stays the same.

## Take their VAT or tax number

In **Settings > Taxes**, under **Checkout tax fields**:

- **Collect VAT / tax ID** adds a field to checkout and prints the number on the invoice. It is called VAT number, GST number or Tax ID depending on the buyer's country.
- **Require it** stops checkout without one. Leave it off if you also sell to the public.
- **Remove VAT for validated EU business buyers (reverse charge)**: a business in another EU country, or in the UK, whose VAT number checks out pays no VAT. The number is checked at checkout, and if the check can't be done, VAT is charged. This only applies once your business address is in the EU and you have an active EU tax registration.

You can also type a customer's number yourself: open the customer, click **Edit** and fill in **VAT / tax number**. It prints on their tax invoices.

## Send e-invoices

Some business buyers, mainly in the EU, need their invoices as e-invoice files their accounting software can import. The **B2B** app, on every plan, adds them: go to **Apps** and click **Add** on **B2B**, then set them up in **Settings > Invoices**. See [E-invoices for business customers](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/e-invoices.md).

## Let them pay by bank transfer

In **Settings > Payments**, add a manual payment method under **Manual payment methods**, for example `Bank transfer`, with your bank details in **Instructions**. The buyer sees it at checkout, the order waits for payment, and you mark it paid when the money arrives. See [Choose a payment gateway](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/choose-a-payment-gateway.md).

For a one-off order you build yourself, a draft order lets you choose **Payment due later** and record the payment when it comes in. See [Create an order manually](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/create-an-order-manually.md).

## Agree prices one order at a time

If your trade prices depend on the order, let buyers send you a request instead of paying, and reply with a quote they pay online. See [Take quote requests and enquiries](https://v3.shoprocket.io/help/quotes-and-enquiries.md).

## What Shoprocket doesn't do yet

- **Separate wholesale price lists.** A product has one price. Give trade customers a tagged discount instead.
- **Tax-exempt customers.** You can't mark a customer as exempt from tax. Reverse charge covers validated EU business buyers.
- **Payment terms.** There are no net 30 terms or credit limits. Use a manual payment method and mark orders paid when the money arrives.
- **Minimum order for trade customers.** Order limits on a product apply to every shopper.
